The joys of rugby

23/ 4/2008

YOUNGSTERS with severe learning difficulties are discovering the joys of rugby, thanks to Stockport rugby club.

The Headlands Road outfit hosted a special tag rugby tournament last Thursday, funded by a grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Manchester.

Over 100 youngsters who have severe learning difficulties took part in the competition, which was the culmination of coaching sessions that had taken place at The Kingsway School, Hazel Grove High School, Aquinas College, Cheadle Marple Sixth Form Colleges and Bridge College to introduce youngsters to tag rugby. Students from Stockport College also took part.

The event was organised by Kay Weeks, of Stockport rugby club, in conjunction with RFU community rugby coach Andy Fuller.

Stockport rugby club is the only club in the north west that runs a tag rugby squad for youngsters of all ages who have severe learning difficulties and mobility problems.

No physical contact is involved and the aim is to have fun, while improving players’ fitness levels and social interaction.

Many of the participants will continue to pursue the sport at Stockport rugby club on Sunday mornings, from 10.30am to 12noon.

For details contact Kay on 0161 427 5595 or email kay.weeks@ntlworld.com

Kay would also like to know if there any other rugby clubs who would like to initiate a similar project, to give Stockport ‘Specials’ some competition.
