Peel deal is not yet signed

16/ 1/2008

WALES scrum-half Dwayne Peel has not signed for Sale Sharks, according to the Stockport-based club.

Head coach Kingsley Jones confirmed Sharks had been in talks with the player but said no deal has been signed yet.

This assertion follows comments released from Llanelli Scarlets, Peel’s current club, and the player himself that appear to confirm a move to Stockport at the end of this season.

Peel said: "My move’s not about money as the deal to stay at Llanelli was similar to that offered by Sale - it’s about the fact that, not having lived outside Wales, I’d like to experience life in another country for a short period."

Llanelli director of rugby, Phil Davies, said of the 26-year-old’s apparent departure: "He has been outstanding for us in the Magners League and "Heineken Cup and will be a credit to his new club. Having never been based outside Wales, this will be an exciting adventure for him.

"I believe he would like to return to Wales and we’d be delighted to talk to him in the future about him coming home to the Llanelli Scarlets."

  • Meanwhile, Sharks’ former fitness coach Nick Johnston has left the Edgeley Park outfit just a week after announcing he would be joining Northampton Saints at the end of the season.

Sharks’ conditioner Scott Pearson is set to take over the role, although the club are also on the look-out for a new fitness coach.

Head coach Jones said: "Scott has been working hard with Nick [Johnston]. He’s learned a lot off Nick. Scott does a lot of the preparation of the [players’ fitness] programmes anyway so really we are just one guy short really on our staff.

"It’s a pity somebody has to go during the season, but you need to move on.

"It’s a new challenge for us. Nick’s left a great legacy here, the boys are really fit and it’s very important to be conditioned.

"I can’t see there being any major issues in terms of where we are now."

Johnston said of his departure: "It’s a big decision, a sad one in some ways but a decision I was kind of forced to make, unfortunately." He blamed delays in being offered a new contract.
