SHARKS Sebastien Chabal and Saracens Steve Borthwick compete in the line-out.
Line-out causes Kingsley concern
17/ 9/2008
SHARKS’ head coach Kingsley Jones has urged referees to keep an eye on the line-out - before someone gets hurt.
Sharks’ flanker Chris Jones was pulled down several times while jumping in the line-out against Saracens but the action went unnoticed or unpunished by referee Rob Debney.
These are not isolated incidents according to Jones, who believes that since the Experimental Law Variations, lifting the restrictions on the number of players in the line-out, were introduced this season referees are paying less attention to this area of the game.
Jones said: "Because of the new number law referees think they haven’t got to count anymore and I think they’ve taken their eye off the line-out.
"That seems to be the case throughout the Premiership, not just in our two games. I wasn’t happy with the line-out refereeing in either of our games - people were being tackled in the air, people were pulled to the ground and there was no gap.
"Of course it’s easier for the referee to look elsewhere and leave the line-out alone but they need to manage that area. It’s dangerous. When you’ve got someone like Brent Cockbain at 6ft 10ins or Andrew Sheridan lifting Chris Jones at 6ft 7ins it’s a long way to fall. I just thought we’d get it sorted before anyone got hurt."
Jones raised his concerns with head of England’s referees Ed Morrison and the subject was due to be discussed at a meeting of referees yesterday [Tuesday].
