Bond quits over paralysis fear

21/12/2004

SALE Sharks centre Graeme Bond has announced his retirement from rugby after being warned by specialists another blow to his neck could cause paralysis.

Bond was injured in the Sharks' Powergen Cup semi-final win over Leeds in March and has not played since.

"The specialist has told me that if I was to receive another blow in the same area it could be much worse than last time. I have two protruding discs near my spinal cord and the risk of playing again is not worth taking," said Bond.

"My time at Sale Sharks was very special to me and my family. The support I received from the fans was incredible and something I will always remember. I would like to thank them all and would like to wish them a very happy Christmas and New Year. I will keep in touch and will be back to see you all in the future."
