High praise for Sharks

5/ 7/2006

A STOCKPORT councillor praised the performance of Sale Sharks and their fans during the Guinness Premiership final at a meeting of the town's council last week.

Councillor Chris Blackburn hailed the team and supporters as 'true ambassadors' of the borough for their performance on and off the pitch at Twickenham when Sharks lifted the top domestic trophy on May 27.

Cllr Blackburn, who is a season ticket holder with the Edgeley Park outfit, said in his speech: "The club and its supporters were true ambassadors for the borough that day, applauding both sides and dancing in the rain when victory was finally achieved.

"Many members sadly will be all too aware that this is pretty much a unique event for the borough as Stockport County have never triumphed in the top tier of English football, although hopefully they will build on last season's finish."

Cllr Blackburn also paid tribute to the work of Sale owner Brian Kennedy, captain Jason Robinson and director of rugby Philippe Saint-Andre in contributing to the club's growth and success.

He added: "I know that Sale Sharks have not been universally welcomed into the borough but I believe they have grown to be part of the fabric of the town.

"Stockport is now becoming a feature on the rugby map and commentators have already spoken about the superb atmosphere being generated at 'fortress' Edgeley Park."

A civic reception to mark the team's Premiership triumph is expected to take place in September.

Fans can relive the Guinness Premiership final against Leicester Tigers, which Sharks won 45-20, by purchasing the new full-match DVD.

The DVD, which is available online or from the club shop from tomorrow [Thursday] costs £12.99, plus £2.49 for postage and packaging.

  • SUPPORTERS can purchase Sharks season-tickets by Direct Debit.

An adult ticket for the Printerland.co.uk stand costs from £20.17 per month, while annual passes for students and over-60s cost £12.42 per month. Children under-16 cost £8.25 per month. To purchase a season ticket call Sharks' ticket office on 08712 220 120 between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday.

Councillor Blackburn is extremly foolish and provocative foolish to make such bold inaccurate and inflamatory statements. He suggests that - "I know that Sale Sharks have not been universally welcomed into the borough but I believe they have grown to be part of the fabric of the town"

NO SIR! EMPHATICALLY NOT TRUE! They have NOT and will never be "part of the fabric of the town" They are SALE Sharks and will always be.

You have lost a lot of votes by your folly Councillor Blackburn, not least the 6 in my household, because of your stupidity by not bothering to understand a sensitive situation. Very embarassing and illconceived behaviour!! Councillor Blackburn.

Its a shame Mr Blackburn is disappointed by Countys past failures, part of the reason for that is too many people choose to put money in the coffers of clubs outside of the town i.e. City and United instead of supporting their own! maybe then County wil compete instead of always struggling, maybe Mr Blackburn might see fit to purchase a season ticket for County instead of glory hunting with Sale (Sale not Stockport), maybe County fans in his ward will remember that at the poll's?
