The Steelmen go marching on

IT’S not been a regular kind of week’s action for Woodley Sports boss Chris Willcock, but it has been a hugely successful one.

Willcock has been speaking to the Express after his side’s splendid 3-0 UniBond League win at Tameside neighbours Mossley on Saturday, a result which followed FA Cup success during the week at the same venue.

Willcock, a former Mossley favourite during his playing days, said: "It’s been a really unusual week for us.

"Playing the same team three times within a week has been very challenging, but I’m over the moon with the way the players have acquitted themselves and with the overall outcome.

"After our home cup draw against Mossley a week last Sunday, we’ve now beaten them twice since, and we’ve come out of all three games unscathed.

"On Saturday we were particularly convincing. We played very well and we should have scored more than three goals.

"We weren’t ruthless enough in front of goal, but I did receive plenty of compliments after the game from the people at Mossley.

"I spent three happy years at Seel Park, and it was nice that they wished me all the best for the rest of the season."

Last Tuesday the Steelmen won their FA Cup replay at Mossley 2-1 thanks to Mario-Sergio Daniel’s dramatic last-minute winner.

On Saturday Daniel bagged two more at Seel Park, where Nick Robinson completed Woodley’s tally.

The local side are now up to fourth place in the league table.

Woodley hosted Curzon Ashton last night [Tues] in another eagerly-awaited derby clash, before they travel to Sheffield to take on North East Counties side Hallam on Saturday in the FA Cup first qualifying round.

Prize money of £2,350 is up for grabs for the winner of that tie.
