Stockport supplies swim stars of the future

7/ 5/2008

WHILE three Stockport Metro swimmers prepare for their Olympic debuts in Beijing, GB call-ups for four of their younger teammates have put them firmly on course for London 2012.

Russell Smith, aged 16, Jessica Powell, 14, and Lucy Worrall, 16, have been selected to represent Great Britain in the European Junior Swimming Championships in Belgrade at the end of July.

They had achieved the necessary qualifying times at the British Championships in Sheffield last month, and their selection has just been confirmed by British Swimming, the sport’s governing body.

The Metro trio will be part of a 44 strong squad led by coach Dave Champion, from Ipswich, who will be looking for them to capitalise on the impressive form they showed in qualifying.

Champion said: "The athletes were selected from what was the best trials we ever had, and the results at the British Championships and the World Short Course will give these guys confidence. I am sure they will want to play their part in the resurgence in British Swimming that we are seeing.

"By offering this kind of international experience and exposing these young but talented athletes to competition at the highest level, we’re preparing them for the London 2012 Olympics and beyond."

While Russell, Jessica and Lucy fly the flag in Serbia, fellow Metro swimmer, 19-year-old Katy Whitfield will be representing Great Britain in the 400m and 800m freestyle at the inaugural Tri Nations Cup in Quebec.

Michael Scott, Director of British Swimming, is relishing the chance to compete against Olympic hopefuls from France and Canada. "It is very important for us to provide great opportunities like this to our next generation of swimmers," he said. "We welcome this great occasion to fast track our young swimmers’ performances."
