O'Shea eyes a spell in front of the cameras

STOCKPORT’S British Darts Organisation star Tony O’Shea has had a steady and satisfactory year so far, but ‘the Silverback’ is hoping to make it through to the televised stages of this weekend’s British Classic tournament in Kettering.

O’Shea is set to face little-known opponent Andrew Currivan in the first round stage at the Kettering Conference Centre on Saturday, but the tournament from the quarter-finals onwards is set to be screened live on Setanta Sports.

O’Shea said: "I’ve been playing well lately.

"I’m pleased enough with my form, I’ve just been having a bit of hard luck really.

"I’ve been picking up ranking points, but other than that I don’t think I’ve been getting the rewards given my decent form.

"I’ll just get on with things though, and if I do my best this weekend then hopefully I can make it through to the televised stages. That’s the goal."

After another decent, if not earth-shattering year so far on the BDO circuit, O’Shea is still listed at number eight in the World rankings.

He reached the last 16 at the recent Welsh Classic and the last 32 at the English Classic, and he is looking forward to putting on a good show at the Belgian Open in a couple of weeks, and when he represents England - alongside fellow Stockport favourite Darryl Fitton - at the Europe Cup in Denmark on August 27.

THE next eagerly-awaited ‘Darts 2U’ challenge takes place at the Guild Hall in Stockport on Saturday, August 2. MC’d by local favourite P Diddy Burns, in action will be World stars Gary Anderson, Gary Robson, Tony O’Shea and Darryl Fitton. They will take on Stockport challengers Paul Lindley, Paul Phillips, Mick Cosgrove and Mark Cairney during what promises to be a cracking night. Table sponsorship is available, while general admission costs just £5. Phone Pete Burns for more details on 07958 513424.
