Magnet making ground as top two miss out

DARTS: With the Superleague game between Reddish WMC and the Royal Mortar being cancelled it gave the chasing pack the chance to catch up.

And the Magnet did just that by defeating an under-strength Farmers Arms 5-2, Dave Tracy (22/23), Martin James (23/25), John Beswick (2x21), Paul Cumston (2x24) and Bob Blakeley (20/23) their winners. Wayne Allman (21/19) and Mark Smith (20/23) replied for the Farmers.

The Houldsworth continue to surprise and this week lost 4-3 to the in-form Bobby Peel. Mick Cooney (20/18), Dave Newton (23/19), Gary Wooley (21/17) and Dave Nelson (19/24) were the Bobby's winners, with Dave Adshead (16/17), Andy Wright (26/15) and Barry Riley (20/23) the Houldsworth's victors.

The Printers came from 3-0 down to beat South West CC with last-on Steve Kirkman winning two tight legs against Andy Carroll to heap more misery on the relegation candidates.

The Bulls Head had Sam Salt in super form in their 4-3 win against Greg Street WMC, the young Marple lad hitting two 14-darters and his seventh 180 of the season.

The game between the Royal Oak and the Gateway ended 3-3 with both sides only fielding six players. League rules state that there can be no drawn games, so firstly it went on the number of legs won, but that was identical, so it then went to the number of darts thrown to win the legs with the side throwing the least winning the points, and it was the Royal Oak who just pipped it by throwing two darts less to secure valuable points in their fight to avoid the drop.

North Reddish WMC are now in real danger at the wrong end of the table after their latest defeat - 5-2 at the Nursery - who had Alan Robinson (28/25), John Allott (30/28), Pete Webb (24/29), Allan Howerth (31/23) and Andy Proctor (28/21) in good form, Paul Yates and Ken Harter replying for North Reddish.

Finally in Superleague, another side desperate for points, the Puss-in-Boots, just failed to record a surprise win at the Copperfield, going down 4-3 in a last-game decider.

In the Premier league, there were wins for the Grey Horse, Manchester Rugby, Jack and Jill, Star and Garter and Barlow Social, which leaves the rugby club well clear at the top with the others all fighting for the last promotion spot.

  • CONGRATULATIONS go to the Navigation's John Plant who won the Bredbury Licensed Houses League's individual competition last week. Plant (19/24) beat Ian Lewis (Crown) in the final.
