It’s time to dig in

Simon Smedley

IT'S been a disappointing week in the UniBond League for Woodley Sports, but team manager Ally Pickering is determined to bounce back to form as quickly as possible.

Depleted Woodley drew 0-0 at home to Ossett Albion last Tuesday night, then on Saturday slipped to a 2-0 home defeat against Bishop Auckland.

Pickering said on Monday: "I'm very disappointed, over the last couple of games we've really let ourselves down.

"Early in the season we worked so hard to get in a decent position in the league, but lately we've just thrown it away.

"We have looked as though we can score goals, but certainly in the last two games we've missed too many chances.

"But having said all that if we win our games in hand we can still go second or third in the table."

Former Coventry and Stoke playing star Pickering does appear to be having a few problems strengthening his squad, however, but one person he has drafted in recently is his former Coventry team-mate Steve Morgan.

Thirty-seven-year-old Morgan has agreed to give Pickering some assistance on the coaching side.

Pickering added: "Centre-halves are my biggest problem at the moment though, I've been trying to bring people in but there doesn't seem to be anyone around at the moment. I've put the word out.

"I'm currently down to about 12 or 13 fit players, it's a bit hairy, but when your budget isn't the best there's not a lot you can do.

"But my lads will all dig in now, we'll all stick together and we're all determined to get back to winning ways."

Woodley travelled to mid-table Clitheroe last night [Tues], while this weekend the Steelmen are without a fixture because scheduled opponents Rossendale United are in FA Cup action.

Mario Daniel and Dave Swanwick were both suspended for the trip to Dark Lane last night.

Woodley's next game is away again, at Stocksbridge Park Steels, on Tuesday night, October 11.

  • WOODLEY chairman Ian Campbell's testimonial year got off to a flying start on Sunday, but Woodley's 1985 side did go down 3-1 in a fund-raising match against Grove United 1985.

Campbell scored for the veteran Woodley side though, when he rammed home a penalty kick with some aplomb.

Campbell said on Monday: "There was a good crowd on and it was a delightful day. I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was so nice to see so many old friends.

"I'm stiff as a board now though!"
