Georgians on the Gilgryst trail again

LAST seasons cup winners met league winners in the preliminary round of the Gilgryst Cup on Saturday.

And it was to be the cup winners who again fared well in their favourite competition.

Georgians, finalists three times in the last four years, showed their great cup form and hit Prestwich from the first whistle in what was a game of great excitement.

Georgians opened the scoring through Alex Crowe as strike partner James Bowden linked up well down the right to set him up.

Georgians' second soon came and it was the goal of the game as Wayne Renshaw delivered a perfect ball for Steve Brigham to head home.

Georgians were then reduced to 10 men as a clash in the centre circle saw the referee send off Steve Brigham and award Georgians a free-kick. This gave Prestwich the way back into the game and they pulled a goal back before half-time.

There was still time for Tom Seaton to score a third for Georgians before the break from a Pete Mellor long ball.

Tim Sammons scored the bizarrest goal of the game, direct from a corner as goalkeeper and fullback got in a terrible mess.

Prestwich would not lie down though and scored their second moments later.

James Bowden then scored Georgians fifth as he finished a one-on-one coolly before Prestwich scored a third to make it a tense finish.
