Making progress

A SOLITARY strike from Chris Young was enough for Woodley Sports in their FA Trophy first round tie at Rossendale United on Saturday.

Young's goal boosted Woodley's coffers by £1,300 and now the Steelmen face another trip, this time way up North to Bishop Auckland, in the second round on Saturday, November 12.

A delighted Woodley boss Ally Pickering said: "We deserved to beat Rossendale, we should have been three or four up by half-time.

"We missed quite a few chances. That's been our only problem all season really, we're not finishing teams off. We need to be more clinical.

"I've been very pleased with the attitude of the lads lately though.

"The squad has been down to the bare bones a bit, but the lads have battled through and Saturday's Trophy win was very rewarding."

It's back to UniBond League action for the Steelmen on Saturday when they welcome Brigg Town (3pm).

Strikers Gregg Blundell and Wes Wilkinson are both suspended for that game, but Mike Turner has been drafted in as a replacement from Salford City.

He played at Rossendale on Saturday.

On Tuesday, October 25, Woodley host Goole in the league.
