Mellor take the advantage

MELLOR wasted little time in regaining their lead at the summit of the Men's North of England Lacrosse League Premier Division.

But the Longhurst Lane club owed part of that move down to a large slice of luck.

Ben McAllister's title-chasers played very well on Saturday, with Sam Davidson, Brandon Wright and Daniel Hodgson all scoring four each in a 21-4 victory over Brooklands Hulmeians.

However, with Stockport, the previous leaders, having their game with Timperley postponed because of a water-logged pitch, Mellor's job was made decidedly easier.

Cheadle moved up to third place and kept the pressure on the leading bunch with 10-5 win at home to Manchester Waconians, while Wilmslow, who were third, slipped down the table after a 16-10 defeat to Heaton Mersey,

Sam Dunwoodie stole the show for Mersey with eight goals, while skipper Chris Battersby weighed in with four as the Oakley Villas outfit continued their good run of form.

Newly-promoted Sheffield Steelers, having faired well in the top flight thus far, were sent crashing to earth with a bump.

The South Yorkshire side were humbled 18-5 by Boardman and Eccles, but their conquerors still remain rooted to the basement on goal difference, behind themselves and Timperley.

Heaton Mersey ladies caused the upset of the weekend in the Women's North of England Premier League with a 10-9 victory over Timperley.

Liz Martin scored four times for Timperley who led 9-8, but Mersey, who lost the domestic title to their rivals last season, snatched a dramatic win thanks to hat-tricks from Claire Black and Charlie Raymer, and further goals from Didi Ecclestone, Sally Whitehead, Rachel Baldwin and Lesley Nunn.
