Darryl has a dream

WITH the Lakeside World Professional Championships now just a month away, Stockport star Darryl Fitton is stepping up a gear as he tries to win the biggest prize in darts.

However, despite the Lakeside winners prize cheque being increased to a whopping £60,000 for the 2006 event, it's not that that Fitton is channeling all his energies into.

"I'm not bothered about the money," said Fitton. "I just want to lift that trophy for the first time.

"That's all I've ever dreamed of, and I know I'm capable of doing it."

Fitton reached the semi-finals last January when losing to eventual champion Raymond van Barneveld, and he's facing a tough task in the first round of the 2006 event, which starts on January 7.

Fitton must take on number two seed Martin Adams in a match which will be televised live on the BBC on Sunday, January 8 at 2.35pm.

'The Dazzler' is in decent form at present though, and this coming weekend he jets off to Holland for the last major tournament before the Lakeside, the Leendesk Masters [formerly the Doeland Masters].

In that competition he will come up against fellow England stars Tony West and John 'Boy' Walton in the group stages. The winner of the group moves into the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Fitton's great mate and fellow Stockport star Tony O'Shea will also be at the Leendesk Masters this weekend where he has been grouped with Gary Robson and England skipper Adams.

At the Lakeside tournament O'Shea, who himself reached the last four in 2004 before losing to Mervyn King, will face Tony West in a first round clash that will be televised live by the Beeb at 6.30pm on Saturday, January 7, the day of his beloved Stockport County's massive FA Cup third round clash with either Oldham or Brentford.

O'Shea will be seeded number six at the Lakeside showpiece event, while Fitton is surprisingly unseeded.
