STOCKPORT'S real life karate kid, Alex Syu, has passed his black belt at the tender age of nine.
The grading was an apt conclusion to a successful year for Alex, who became UK Karate Champion in March, beating off fierce competition in his age group.
A pupil at Stockport Shotokan Karate School, in Reddish, Alex has been training in the martial art for five years.
Club owner Mo Chebouli, a black belt fifth dan, said: "I've been teaching karate for 33 years and Alex is one of my best pupils.
"He is one of the future stars of martial arts. Alex is so dedicated and knows so much, he listens, does it and really understands."
Alex underwent intensive training with UK chief instructor of the Traditional Karate Federation Sensei Kawasoe, an expert in his field, before achieving his black belt first dan at international level.
