Cheadle on the march

DEFENDING champions Stockport are through to the semi-finals of the Daily Telegraph Senior Flags Trophy.

The Beech Road club defeated Boardman and Eccles 10-6 at the weekend, while last year's beaten finalists Heaton Mersey triumphed 16-5 at home to Timperley.

Stockport were pushed all the way by Boardman, but Mersey, meanwhile, were too good for Timperley and led throughout a one-sided contest.

Also through to the last four are former winners Cheadle, who beat Wilmslow 18-9, while Men's North of England League Premier Division leaders Mellor were 12-6 victors against Manchester Waconians.

This year's semi-final draw will be made next month.

Cheadle saw Gaz Wilkinson net five goals, while Adrian Bennett scored four goals. Dave Carman scored a hat-trick, while Daren Baythorpe (2), Paul Flowers (2), Andrew Beard and Neil Preston added the rest of the goals as the home side led 6-3, 9-5 and 12-8.

"We were incredibly bad against when we played Wilmslow in the league, so we wanted to put the record straight," revealed Cheadle coach Geoff Condron.

"We were brilliant. We're through to the Senior Flags semi-finals and looking forward to whoever we play."

Condron was understandably delighted with the way his team played, but was adamant his team could have won by more.

"Dave Carman must have hit their goalkeeper's helmet eight times. We could have scored 30 goals," added Condron.

"We don't mind who we get in the next round. We've just got to get on with it and try and get in the final."
