Young hits rifle target

STOCKPORT College's sharp-shooter Stuart Young is preparing for the trip of a lifetime to South Africa with Great Britain's under-19s rifle squad.

The 17-year-old construction student, who trains at the City of Salford Rifle Club, was selected from 200 applicants for the eight-strong team to compete in South Africa's National Championships.

Stuart, who has previously represented England and Lancashire in the sport, said: "I'm really looking forward to visiting South Africa. Since finding out I had a place on the under-19s squad, I've spent every weekend training.

"I got into shooting through my Dad and have been taking part myself for about three years but this will be my first tour abroad."

Simon Fraser, secretary for the Council for Cadets Rifle Shooting who organise the annual tour, said: "Stuart has tremendous potential, he's been shooting very well. He is enthusiastic, determined and capable of shooting at a high level."

Many former members of the under-19s squad have progressed into the Great Britain team's senior ranks, Stuart's older brother is part of the GB under-25s set-up.

During the three-week trip, as well as competing in the championships, the group will have the opportunity to camp out in the South African bush and take in some of the country's finest scenery.

Stuart, from Swinton, has funded the tour through sponsorship - Stockport College have pledged £100 while Stuart raised £250 by organising a five-a-side tournament at Eccles rugby union club.

He is still seeking further funding ahead of the rifle team's departure to South Africa on March 26.
