THE final week of action in the Stockport Licenced Houses league saw the Gardeners retain their crown after finishing the season with a 4-3 win against old rivals the Crown.

Ray Matthews and Dave Adshead put the Crown 2-0 up, but John Hollins and Paul Taylor levelled it for the champions.

Brian Adshead then put the Crown 3-2 up, leaving them needing only one more game for victory. But it wasn't to be as Kevin Weir and Pete Gerrard won the last two to take the points.

Victory was made sweeter by the fact that Hollins hit two 180s to add to the two he hit the previous week to snatch the most for the season crown (11) from long-standing holders Alan Perkin and Pete Mutch.

Meanwhile, the Royal Oak secured their Superleague status with a 4-3 win at the Jack and Jill.

Alan Perkin, Billy Purvis, Martin Power and outgoing captain Paddy Hackett were their winners, with Steve Mohan, Pete Mutch and Andy Wray replying.

The Armoury are virtually assured of second place. They are two points behind the Bulls Head but have a game left against already-relegated Farmers Arms.

They both won 4-3 this week, but the damage was done last week when the Armoury beat Bulls Head 6-1.

The other relegated sides are the Printers, Barlow Road and the Bobby Peel, who all lost.

The Printers went down at the Rugby Club, Barlow to the Turnpike and the Bobby Peel to the Farmers. All four sides will find it difficult next season with the format returning to the two up, two down system, now that all leagues are equal.

• ALL teams need to attend tomorrow's (Thursday) meeting at the Bungalow club in Edgeley.

The committee will be determining the format for the coming season, so any new teams need to attend as well to be assured of a place in the largest darts league in the north west.
