Adam’s high hopes

BRAMHALL-based basketball hopeful Adam Gerami will be gunning for glory when he represents England Under-18s at the European Championships in Romania next week.

Stockport College student Adam, who has recently turned 18, is confident that England can improve on their third-placed finish at the last championships two years ago.

"We're aiming for first place this year," said the talented teenager. "So far we've prepared well and I fancy us to go the distance."

Adam, who is a forward, started his basketball career at the age of 13 when he turned out for Stockport in the National League.

From there he was picked up by the famous Manchester Magic club, and has since starred for them at under-16s, under-18s and men's level.

Adam and his England squad-mates left for Bulgaria last Sunday for an important week-long training camp, then the European Championships take place from this weekend - lasting two weeks - in Romania.

Adam is currently studying for a Sports Science Diploma at Stockport College, but his ultimate dream is to carve out a professional career playing basketball.

"My ultimate ambition would be to play professionally in the American NBA," said Adam.

"At the moment I'm trying to secure a scholarship in North Carolina in the States. I'm just waiting to hear whether I've been accepted.

"There will be lots of scouts from European clubs at the championships in Romania though, so something might happen for me over there."
