Wilson's sparkling

ATTACKER Richard Wilson led the way as Stockport sparkled against Wilmslow to maintain their lead at the top of the Men's North of England League Premier Division.

The former England striker top-scored with four goals as the Beech Road club made it three wins on the bounce in domestic competition.

A comprehensive 19-5 home win was enough to collect full points once again, with Dave Bryant and the Singleton brothers, Nathan and Joe, also starring with hat-tricks.

Midfielder Chris Bland (2) and Steve Howe added the rest as the home side won every quarter 4-1, 4-2, 6-2 and 5-2.

And to Stockport's delight, title-rivals Mellor suffered another shock defeat as their title defence took another big knock.

The defending champions, beaten by Wilmslow last weekend, were edged out 12-11 at home to Manchester Waconians, with their opponents having produced an inspired second-half comeback.

Leading 8-3 at half-time Mellor, who have lost key players Sam Davidson and James Shaw (to Poynton) and Andy Brickell (to Timperley), could have been forgiven for thinking victory was theirs, but Wacs hit back to win the second half 9-3 to surprise their hosts.

American Danny Myerow scored a hat-trick for Mellor and England midfielder Alistair Wallace and Ollie Hall bagged braces.

On a weekend of shocks, Senior Flags holders Heaton Mersey were embarrassed by Timperley, beaten 11-5 at their Heatons Sports Club ground.

But former league winners Cheadle had plenty to smile about after their comfortable 19-4 home win over Brooklands Hulmeians.
