50 seasons and still going strong

WOODSMOOR stalwart Phil Barratt has just commenced his 50th season competing in the Stockport and District Table Tennis Association league.

Phil's abilities first came to light when he was 12 years old and finished in first place in a table tennis coaching scheme at Butlins holiday camp in Skegness.

Phil returned home, joined the Raven Table Tennis Club and developed into an accomplished young player who represented both the Stockport and Cheshire junior teams. He also won the Stockport junior singles title.

In the mid-1990s Phil began coaching junior players, and among his proteges is Bramhall's emerging star Caroline Hallows, who has represented England at under-18s level.

Phil's skills as a coach were recently recognised by the England Table Tennis Association, and he has twice been awarded the Wally Sharples Merit award for services to the sport.

He coaches at Neville Road, Bramhall High and Mile End schools, resulting in successful runs into the National finals twice in recent years.

Later this month, he will be taking a local junior squad to a tournament in France.

   I AM A LITTLE OLD BUT I WOULD LOVE TO PLAY TABLE TENNIS AT ONE OF HIS CLUBS. I HAVE PLAYED BEFORE AND CONSIDER MYSELF TO BE AN OK PLAYER. TROUBLE IS THAT THERE IS NOBODY TO PLAY WITH ON A REGULAR BASIS. PLEASE COULD YOU PASS THIS ON TO PHIL AND ASK HIM TO CONTACT ME. REGARDS MARK
