Woodley’s wonders

WOODLEY Sports produced a scintillating display of attacking football on Saturday at Lambeth Grove as they crushed Marine 6-1 in the first round of the FA Trophy competition.

The famous UniBond Premier Division outfit from Liverpool were sent back down the East Lancs Road with their tails between their legs after the Steelmen powered their way into the second round courtesy of goals from Daniel Douglas-Pringle (2), Chris Curley, Carlos Meakin, Mario Sergio-Daniel and Luke Horrocks.

Delighted Woodley boss Ally Pickering said: "It was one of those days and one of those performances where absolutely everything went according to plan.

"After a couple of defeats, we decided to have a team meeting on Thursday and all the lads confirmed that they are all in this together. Saturday was another great day for the club.

"All day we closed down Marine as a group, and we worked as one unit.

"In the second half we really kicked on and we could have scored more goals to be honest."

Saturday's superb win handed Woodley a timely confidence boost after the previous weekend's FA Cup defeat at Gainsborough, and the subsequent midweek league defeat at Rossendale United.

Last Tuesday Woodley went down 2-0 after Sergio-Daniel, Douglas-Pringle and Danny Queeley were involved in a traffic accident en route to the game and were unable to make it. The car the players were travelling in was written off following a collision.

Depleted Woodley were forced to name boss Pickering as their only fit substitute, and during the game saw Ashley Crank ordered off after he picked up two yellow cards.

However, the local outfit bounced back in great style on Saturday and are now in good heart again for this weekend's tough-looking trip to UniBond division one leaders Eastwood Town.

Commanding centre-back Mark Phillips [knee] is a major injury doubt ahead of the trip to the Midlands.
