We just want to play

Simon Smedley

WOODLEY Sports boss Ally Pickering is confident that his players will remain firmly focused on playing football this week, despite the now infamous crossbow incident on Saturday.

The sight of a two foot long arrow coming hurtling over the stand at Lambeth Grove would be enough to unnerve most people, but the Woodley players simply want to get back to extending their good recent run of results - which they had looked likely to add to last weekend until the unsavoury incident.

Woodley's game last night [Tues] did go ahead as planned, after opponents Warrington Town had earlier expressed fears ahead of the UniBond League Challenge Cup tie.

It's then back on the road this coming weekend as Woodley travel to Moor Green for a crunch FA Trophy third round tie.

Pickering said: "The lads will be okay for this week's games, they will be concentrating fully on getting back to playing football.

"After Saturday's match was abandoned, all most of the lads wanted to know was whether the result would stand as there wasn't long to go.

"Nobody at Woodley has ever seen anything like it in 25 years, but we're three or four games behind already so we don't want to be playing too much catch-up."

Woodley were comfortably 3-0 up on Saturday when the match against Alsager Town had to be abandoned. Adam Morning, Mario Sergio-Daniel and Nick Boothby had scored, but UniBond League officials must now decide whether the game has to be replayed.

Meanwhile, Pickering has pepped up his striking options this week with two new captures.

Ex-Manchester United youngster Graham Flanagan has joined the Steelmen, as has former Stockport County junior Paul Douglas.

Pickering added: "I've got seven strikers now, I felt I needed the competition. Players know they can't slip up now."

Saturday's Trophy opponents Moor Green are currently in mid-table in Conference North.
