Woodley’s next step

Simon Smedley
29/11/2006

IN-FORM Woodley Sports earned themselves another £3,000 in prize money thanks to Saturday's terrific 3-0 FA Trophy away win at Conference North side Moor Green.

Their additional reward is a home tie in the first round proper, as £4,000 will be up for grabs when UniBond Premier Division rivals Witton Albion arrive at Lambeth Grove on Saturday, December 16.

Delighted Woodley boss Ally Pickering said: "I've got be happy at having home advantage in the first round proper.

"It's a local side again in what in now the last 32, Witton should bring a few. I would have liked a tie against a big Conference side like Oxford, or even a local derby against Droylsden, but we can't complain."

Woodley triumphed 3-0 at Moor Green thanks to goals from Daniel Douglas-Pringle, Gavin Salmon and Adam Morning.

Pickering added: "We absolutely destroyed Moor Green, we could have been four up by half-time.

"It's another step for the lads. They've shown their capabilities this season as we've only lost once in five games against teams from a higher league in cup competitions.

"From the very first whistle we were down Moor Green's throats, they just couldn't handle our pace and tempo.

"It's up to the lads to take that form into Saturday's league game now. We need to keep picking up points so we can keep up with the chasing pack. We're unbeaten in seven games now though, we're in decent form."

Saturday's 3-0 win followed last Tuesday's 3-0 success over Warrington Town in the UniBond League Challenge Cup. Goals that night came from new boy Graham Flanagan, Danny Queeley and Douglas-Pringle.

Woodley host fellow promotion-chasers Shepshed Dynamo on Saturday (3pm).

  • WOODLEY have been awarded the three points from the recent game against Alsager Town, which was abandoned late on after a crossbow arrow was fired onto the pitch. Woodley were 3-0 up at the time of the incident.

The Woodley player who was just missed by the arrow, Jamie Kay, has this week transferred back to Stalybridge Celtic.

Come one people - this is the best footballing side in the area - forget county, forget stalybridge etc. These boys play with pace, skill and passion. Problem is attendances! Lets get behind this local team. Facilities are great, clubhouse & beer is good, as are the pies. Finally - the football is on the up. Bring your kids down and lets get behind them. thanks
