Woodley wonders!

WHAT a way to celebrate winning November's UniBond League division one club-of-the-month award.

In-form Woodley Sports stunned fellow promotion hopefuls Shepshed Dynamo 6-3 at Lambeth Grove on Saturday, and that was despite being a man short for an hour.

Steelmen boss Ally Pickering received his gong from league officials before the game, and after it he was unsurprisingly delighted - perhaps less so with some of his side's defending though.

Pickering said: "A lot of managers don't want these awards because so often they go on and lose the next game. But I'm delighted to have won it, and to have won so convincingly today.

"We scored six goals and I'm very happy with the three points, but we did give three sloppy goals away and that was a bit disappointing.

"We'll scare anyone going forward though, we've got so much pace.

"Shepshed were above us, but we made them look poor. You've still got to beat these poor teams though, and we are unbeaten in nine games now.

"It keeps the ball rolling, and as long as we're in or around the promotion places by the Christmas period, people will have to keep looking over their shoulders.

"It's the lads on the field who have won the club-of-the-month award though. I pick up the prize and have my photograph taken, but it's the players who have earned it for the club."

Danny Queeley opened Woodley's account on Saturday with a crisp finish on 22 minutes, but Mario-Sergio Daniel saw red on the half-hour mark and the home side could have been up against it.

That was far from the case, however, and the Steelmen went two up before the break thanks to Daniel Douglas-Pringle's far-post header.

Skipper Chris Curley made it 3-0 on 55 minutes, but Shepshed did reply 60 seconds later through Ade Adelugan.

Substitute Gavin Salmon looked to have wrapped up victory with a close-range finish 15 minutes from time, but goals from Shepshed's Royce Turville and Andy Bourne brought it back to 4-3 with four minutes still to play.

However, Salmon and Adam Morning settled the nerves in the dying seconds as their neat finishes completed another excellent win for Woodley.

The Steelmen hit the road this week for two important league games. Last night [Tues] they were at Skelmersdale United, and on Saturday they travel to Cammell Laird.

  • LEFT-back Cavell Coo has joined Woodley on a month's loan from Crewe Alexandra.

He was hoping to play against Shepshed on Saturday, but the transfer paperwork was received by the league 10 minutes too late.
