Hulme’s Styal-ish win

CHEADLE Hulme are the proud new holders of the Peter Howarth Trophy.

They emerged as convincing winners of the L and C Annual Golf day at Styal Golf Club, organised by WGTB Golf.

The Hulme quartet of Rick Worsley (Styal GC), Steve Merricks (Bramhall), Ross Birch (Shrigley Hall) and Craig Armstrong (Bramhall) set a hot early pace with their combined rounds of 43 and 45 points for what proved to be a winning total of 88 points.

Last year's winners Old Ashtonians put up a great fight in defence of their trophy, and their quartet of Ken and Peter Hindle, Joe Robinson and Chris Greenhough finished in second place with scores of 44+41 = 85 to win a round of four at De Vere Mottram Hall.

The other top team were Burnage Metro A and B of Colin Finch, Pete Jones, Wayne Jones and Andy Clarke with 83 points.

Finch had a day to remember with an eagle two on the stroke one 370-yard third hole, and totted up the best card of the day with 46 points.

Disley's men played for the JNR Stewards Trophy which was lifted by Matt Oxley with 43 points.

Trailing in his wake were Robert Potter (40), Felix Newman and Mike Holtom (both 37).

There was some sharp scoring at Romiley in the June medal with Ian Gibson winning a card play-off on 67 to take division one from JC Bancroft.

In division two, T Rydon triumphed with 64, from Adam Harrison (66).

J Beaver also posted a sizzling 64 to take division three from A Gallagher (65) and Mike Tudge (66), with Chris Burgess and A Clegg a further three shots back.

The action is hotting up in the WGT Golf Trophy.

Heaton Moor duo J Gough and P Rankine took out the holders Andy Nicholson and Joel King of Denton, and also through to the last 64 are J Schofield and G Briscoe (Reddish Vale), and G Davenport and G Bailey (Mellor and Townscliffe).
